Nineteenth Amendment Designer Lindy Fox of her eponymous label tells us about her experience attending the Council for Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) Awards two years in a row. As a finalist of the CFDA Scholarship competition at FIT, Lindy got the chance to showcase her looks on the best model and rep around – herself! Read on to see how walking the red carpet really feels!
This year was my second year in a row attending the annual CFDA Fashion Awards on June 5th 2017 held at the Hammerstein Ballroom. The first year I was invited to attend because one of my portfolio projects at FIT was in the running for the annual CFDA Scholarship competition. I sat in the student section and once the show was underway, I could feel the electric energy in the air, mostly in the student section because we knew it was a special opportunity to be there, since we weren’t members of the CFDA yet!
About a week before my first CFDA award show, I made the outfit I wore, just in case I’d be able to be photographed on the red carpet and asked about my look! I wore a bias cut, white, up-cycled, silk, floor-length skirt with a nude leotard under a muslin jacket with pleated leather and up-cycled knit details. This year, I was fortunate to go again and, of course, I wore one of my own designs! I wore one of the looks from my recent Senior Thesis collection; a strapless knit dress with a torso fabricated in jacquard and a half-cardigan, knit, structure skirt with an asymmetrical waistline. I paired it with a hand-knit wrap piece on top with metal and wool embellishment. As a final treat I got my makeup done by a professional makeup artist a few hours before the show.
The ceremony this year was hosted by the hilarious Seth Meyers who famously wore a Marc Jacobs lace dress over nothing but a pair of boxers the last time he hosted in 2012 (Google this if you haven’t already!). Seth got the night started by talking about the past year in American fashion and pretty quickly the first award of the night went to Raf Simons at Calvin Klein for Menswear Designer of The Year. He gave an emotional speech and it was a treat to hear from him and see him live. Raf also won Womenswear Designer of The Year and even addressed the students in his speech. All of the intro videos that profile the nominees of each category were so beautifully done, it’s quite an experience to see it unfold live! After the ceremony ended, it was time to get ready for the afterparty. But first, we got to mingle on the red carpet with various members of the CFDA and celebrities. Some of the highlights included talking about FIT with Donna Karan, talking about life and family with Robert Geller and Ana Beatriz Lerario, and getting hugs and selfies from the legendary Pat McGrath.
After the red carpet, we headed to the afterparty at the Boom Boom Room in The Standard Hotel Downtown where we danced the night away among more CFDA members and their celeb guests. A highlight of the party was getting to meet Imran Amed the founder of Business of Fashion. I only wish I’d had more time with him to talk as I think he’s one of the best voices in fashion today.
All in all it was a treat to go to the CFDA Awards and test my dress out in the real world and celebrate our fashion industry and I hope to get to attend again in the future!
