Hi Sangeetha! Thanks for talking to us all the way from Australia! Can you tell us a little about yourself?
I am a model, mum, and an IT Portfolio Manager by profession. Being a global citizen, I have had the opportunity to travel the world widely, meet with diverse sets of people and learn a lot in the process! We are a very close-knit family of 4 – doting hubby: Rishabh, my biggest supporter: 11-year-old son Shourya, and our golden girl: 7-month-old retriever puppy Laila.
I started my career as an entrepreneur at the age of 19, and since then have been on this adventurous life journey aka doing something new, exciting and venturing out to do things that I have never done before. Starting a career in modeling was one such musing.
Wow! You do a lot! What’s one fun fact about you?
I have won 3 pageant titles – reigning Mrs. Earth Australia 2018 title holder, Mrs. Continents Australia 2017 and Mrs Australia Planet 2015. I have represented Australia in Bulgaria and Las Vegas (took out a few international awards as well), and will be heading to Vegas again this year for the Mrs. Earth international pageant. On the modeling front, I have done a lot of runway gigs including Melbourne spring fashion show, RAW Melbourne, Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival and most recently the World Fashion Festival Awards show at Dubai.
Also, in my spare time, I enjoy playing Djembe (African drum).
What is the fashion scene like in Melbourne?
The fashion scene in Melbourne is quite bold but chilled out. What I mean by that is, Melburnians are very confident with their dressing style and people here can carry off anything and everything (from vintage to latest in vogue outfits). There are tons of boutique designer showrooms to feast your eyes on and then there are a plethora of home-grown Aussie designer options like Hayley van den Berg! After all, Melbourne is called the Fashion Capital of Australia for a reason!
Added to this, is the weather of Melbourne – one can experience all four seasons in a day (yes, I did not believe a word of it till I moved in here!). What that means is that Melburnians typically can be seen doing 3-4 outfit changes in a day!! The more, the merrier I say!
When did you develop a love of fashion? Acting and modeling?
I am one those who has grown up watching the Miss Universe and Miss World pageants, since I was a little girl. I remember I used to be glued to the television set when these shows would be on, but I never really went about doing anything in fashion – it would be rather hard to picture that I was a serious tomboy until my early 20’s. But somewhere in my subconscious, I always yearned for the opportunity to see myself in a print magazine and guess that was the start. Pretty randomly when I was 27 yrs old, I decided to get a portfolio done – only with the intent of trying to do something that I have never done before. I started off with a pageant in which I made it to the top 15. This gave me the confidence to try a few others…one led to the other and I ended up bagging multiple national titles in Australia. Interestingly enough, my stint on the pageant side led to me to the modelling and fashion world. To be honest, I came into this entire fashion business quite cold. But the plus side to it, was the fact that I had to learn everything from scratch if I wanted to make it work. Contrary to what people think, there is stark contrast between pageants and runways. Given that I entered this field with zero experience, I was keen to learn the differences, the subtleties and implement it. I believe I have been able to do this successfully! Acting, then became more of a logical extension to all that I was doing in the pageant/modeling field. And so here I am…! ☺
In one word, how would you describe your style?
How do you incorporate your own personal style with what you do?
I think it comes quite naturally to me…people always associate me with being a powerful personality. I believe in creating an impact (aka make a difference) in all that I do. This is kind of ingrained in my DNA I guess, only because I have always tried to take the path less travelled.
What spoke to you about Hayley van den Berg’s collection that wore in your shoot?
One of the very first things that attracted me to the van den Berg collection is the color of the fabric. Blue is my favorite color and it compliments my skin tone very well. The second bit is the comfort and ease of wear. It is very easy to up-style the garments with relatively simple accessories and it makes for a great casual business wear…which is a great plus for women like me working in the corporate sector!
Describe your morning routine. At 9 am each day, you are….
The day begins at 6.00 am with a strong cuppa (must add – coffee culture in very big in Melbourne!). But then, that’s the only cup I do in the day! An hour or so is spent making brekkie, packing lunch for all of us, getting ready and catching up on modeling work messages! A good half an hour post that, is “lost” cuddling my golden retriever ‘Laila’ and then its rush hour – get to work, beyond which it is heads down! ☺
Describe your evenings…
For a start, evenings are a whole lot crazier than the mornings…peak hours really! I get back from work, and get started with the cuddle routine again – pet that is! I then spend an hour and half or so solidly multi-tasking – work conference calls, dinner prep and clean-up. Then it’s time to hit the gym! Back home, it is then time to cuddle the family members this time (hubby and son), catch up on some TV shows, have dinner, catch-up on more modelling messages, read a fiction novel and then hit the sack!
Your biggest fashion faux pas?
My biggest faux pas would have to be the time in my early 20’s, when I had boy cut hairstyle and could be seen carrying an orange colored mini handbag!
On Sunday, we’ll find you wearing:
PJs and a comfy tee, unless I am heading out for a photoshoot!
What is your go-to power outfit?
A black suit with a pinstripe shirt.
What trend do you hope never goes out of style?
One thing that will never go out of fashion is a fit body! I believe “Fitness” is a trend that will always remain in vogue.
What does fashion mean to you?
Fashion to me is a way of making a statement of your personality, to the world!
What excites you about Nineteenth Amendment?
I can’t be more excited about the fact that Nineteenth Amendment is based out of NYC. It’s amazing that they give the opportunity to expose brands and personalities from all over the world!
