Tell us a little bit about yourself.

My name is Anna Karingal and I’m a software developer at Nineteenth Amendment. Before I started programming, I worked for a Punk and Reggae independent record label. When I’m not coding (which is hardly ever these days), I’m collecting records, going to shows, and doing crafts like knitting and sewing.

What does fashion mean to you?

Fashion is an expression of self, style, and mood. It’s also art and craftsmanship.

How would you describe your style?

I think my style is influenced by the music I listen to which is generally from the sixties and seventies, so I tend to go for garments inspired by or from those decades.

When did you develop a love of fashion?

Probably in middle school. My fashion has always been influenced by and related to the music I listen to, and this is when I started listening to punk music. I distinctly remember my mom asking me why I wore all black all the time. I still wear all black about 90% of the time.

That’s funny – because this garment is probably the furthest thing from all black :)…

This Meghan Hughes Star Mini Dress is super fun and unique and speaks to me because it’s a little bit sixties, glam, and rock and roll. I love the star cutouts, which are a little risque but also super cute, and the mix of materials is really creative and interesting. Also, I just really love shift dresses and probably have 15 vintage dresses at home.

How do you incorporate your own personal style with what you do?

I probably live up to the tech and music industry stereotypes and wear jeans and t-shirts to work almost every day. I have a work wardrobe that’s essentially all black basics because I don’t like to make too many decisions getting ready for work. On weekends or nights out I love to wear bright colors, prints, glitter/metallics, and more fun pieces.

Your biggest fashion faux pas, or a regrettable purchase / style phase:

I visited London with my family when I was a teenager and bought a pair of plaid wool pants at Camden Market. I regretted that purchase immediately when we got home, not just because of the print but also because we lived in Singapore where it is at least 90℉ all the time.

What’s the one garment you’ll never give away?

My black jean jacket, which I’ve had for nearly 10 years now. Also, I have a lot of band t-shirts that are sentimental for me for one reason or another.

What excites you most about Nineteenth Amendment?

I find the fashion industry challenges we’re tackling really interesting from both a business and technology perspective. Also, it’s fun to see the latest work from new designers… oh, and the people that work here are awesome!
