Designer Spotlight: RYURYU
Inspired to create an image of clean and simple elegance, Beckie Ryu has made clothing as easy and timeless as possible for the modern woman. Soft hues and silky fabrics help to create pieces that exude luxury and are easy to dress up or down. On top of great wearable design, a portion of all sales go towards feeding children in rural North Korea by contributing to the NK Children Support Program through the YUST PUST Foundation (YPF). We sat down with Beckie in today’s designer spotlight to talk about how RYURYU’s timeless pieces fill a specific need in the fashion industry.
How and why did you start designing?
I love seeing things go from a concept to a final product. I started my line because I noticed a void in the market for high quality basics that were reasonably priced. There was always a lot of novelty and embellished pieces in the contemporary market, but every time I searched for a basic wardrobe staple, it was either very cheap—both in cost and quality—or well made with a very hefty price tag. Although our line doesn’t consist of just basics, its minimalist tone allows you to mix and match with items that are already in your wardrobe.
What are some struggles you face?
Not compromising quality while also keeping the costs down. All of our garments are manufactured in NYC, which can be very pricey. However, it’s worth it; not only do we minimize issues in production, but we also get to play a role in reviving our domestic garment districts.
What do you think about fashion today?
With easy access to everything, consumers want things immediately. That’s why trends fly by and people are always looking for the next cool thing. I don’t look down on fast fashion—because who doesn’t like a good deal?—but I don’t think it can ever replace high-quality pieces (whether it’s a classic white tee or a LBD) that will last season after season.

Look at the care label before making a purchase and don’t pay too much for unlined garments!
