You started your collection as a new mom – why did you start designing?

“Now or never” is what my husband said when I couldn’t go back to work after having my daughter. Our hectic work schedules weren’t so accommodating for our newborn and I decided to stay at home with my daughter. When she started school, I was itching to go back to work but I had been longing to start my own venture and follow my passion. With the support and encouragement from my family and friends, I was able jump on it. I took six months to research, take some classes as a refresher and build a business plan. Now, here I am with two successful collections and more on the way!

What is your fashion philosophy?

Quality and trend! I love trend but more importantly, I love a quality garment. I want my garments to stay in my customer’s closet forever! Hence, a quality piece that you can wear today or 10 years from now.

How has your design changed over time?

Every collection comes with lessons learned. What I know today from when I started is almost overwhelming but in a good way. I’m learning more and more about what my target market loves and likes. With every collection, I try to keep the consumer in mind while designing.

We love the Icelandic inspiration behind your collection. Can you tell us more about how it translated to design?

The gorgeous columns of the Reynisfjara beach in Iceland are something that everyone should see. Words can’t explain how beautiful it is. Those columns made me want to use a form of irregular stripes in my custom print for SS17. Since the collection is for Spring/Summer, I wanted to use some bright colors in the print.

What is your biggest hurdle building a brand today?

Truthfully, there isn’t one hurdle. For me, it has been managing my time between mommy duties and working on a start-up since both of them are 24 hour jobs. In the business of fashion, the hurdle is truly to keep up and keep going. Seasons go by in the blink of an eye and you’re working on everything for the future but trying to balance the present too.

What do you think about fashion today?

I think that it is the best it has ever been! Through social media, we have access to more brands and more styled looks. Online shopping has taken over and fashion is so much more accessible today. It is an ideal time for emerging designers like myself.

Where do you go and what do you do for inspiration?

I love being inspired by almost anything. Sometimes it is a picture or sometimes it is a place.  My eyes are always wide open for inspirations in everything I do. I take pictures when I love something and scroll through them later.

Any tips and tricks of the trade?

I think I can officially write a book about tricks of the trade! Knowing your target market is key but, more importantly, sales is everything!
