Designer Victoria Cocieru of Kheops began her brand in her home, Moldova, and migrated to West Coast. Grey Seattle should be ready for her vibrant unicolor garments, geometric lines, and built in accessories. The Kheops girl picks who she wants to be, what to wear, and where she wants to wear it. In this Designer Spotlight, we chat about following your dream, Seattle style, and understanding the difference between you and your designs.

How and why did you start designing?

My life has always been linked to fashion design. My mother’s dream was to become designer and, since I was little, I knew I wanted to do design and I knew for sure that I’d do it! I graduated with bachelor’s degree in fashion design and I had a fashion store and my own label named Kheops in my home country, Moldova. I moved to the US several months ago to continue my career here. For me it was very difficult to leave everything and to come to the US, but I don’t regret anything because America is a place of great opportunities and chances. I started my business in fashion design immediately after I finished my studies. It was difficult at first, but if you do what you like in the end everything gets better.

What is your fashion philosophy?

My fashion philosophy it’s very simple, it doesn’t exists. I just have some basic rules about my designs, and that’s all: unicolor fabrics, contrasts of textures, metal accessories, rigid and geometric lines and not too romantic garments. Our clothing style is eclectic.

How has your design changed over time?

My designs changed very much. Every designer must develop their style. In my case it was very visible. From the beginning, I did garments in my personal style, but soon I understood that I need to look around, to see what women want, what they love. If your goal is to sell good your creations, you need to consider people’s preferences, not just what you hope they will wear.

What is your biggest hurdle building a brand today?

For me personally, here in USA it’s difficult to get connections, especially fashion connections. I just came and I need to enter in the world of fashion here in Seattle. Also when you come from another culture, community, lifestyle, etc., it’s difficult to understand what you need to do and to do it correctly. But i really like it here, the people are very sociable and there are many talented people – it’s healthy competition.

What do you think about fashion today?

Today’s society is extremely fashion and style conscious. Unfortunately, clothing designers today go too far and forget that the fashion need to look decent, to transmit something. I like the woman of today. She’s more emancipated and confident. There’s also lots of variation between  fashion stores and boutiques that allows women to choose who wants she to be today – sensual, bad, classy, romantic, or rebel.

Where do you go and what do you do for inspiration?

For me the best inspiration is the all world. It can be a tree, or a woman, or the fabric, or anything and everything else. This is the good part of fashion and the art. There are no limits. Also, my designer and brand idols are David Koma, Balmain, and Zuhair Murad.

Any tips and tricks of the trade?

My first and most important tip is to work, to work hard, to do what you like, to forget about the limits. Fashion is a infinite world in which you can be everything you want.
