This year took Nineteenth Amendment and our designers on a journey from launching to scaling. With everything from expanding our manufacturing base to Puerto Rico, to taking over two NYC flagship retailers, 2016 was the year of no limits and all possibility. Thanks for joining us on this journey!
JANUARY: A New Miracle on 34th Street
Nineteenth Amendment kicked off the year in a very public way with a half page in the Sunday New York Times and a 34th Street facing window display at Macy’s Herald Square! Seven of our lucky designers had their work on display for the world to see and shop.
NY Fashion Week got a major takeover! While brands were touting see now, buy now, we took it a step further (and more sustainably!) and created the first ever see now, buy now, make now NYFW presentation in the world’s largest department store. Four of our designers were selected to show and sell their collections inside Macy’s Herald Square. Over 1,500 shoppers participated in shopping the future of fashion.
MARCH: A Fashion Activation First
We made our SXSW debut and brought along a very large suitcase filled with designer clothing for a Dell and Springboard sponsored trunk show in Austin, Texas. The techie crowd shopped independent designer looks while listening to set lists by Brandi Cyrus and drinking margaritas – it was a very fashionable South By Southwest activation!
APRIL: Fashion in the Tropics
Hola! Nineteenth Amendment jets down to Puerto Rico to participate in Parallel18 and explore USA-made fashion manufacturing. During our five months on the island, we discovered great design and manufacturing talent while also discovering great locations for photoshoots!
MAY: Welcome Nina Garcia!
We’re lucky to have such a great team at Nineteenth Amendment and in May our team got even better when Nina Garcia joined our advisory board. Nina, the creative director of Marie Claire magazine and Project Runway judge brought with her industry know-how and a complimentary mission to champion emerging fashion design talent. See Nina Garcia skyping with one of our designers!
Lucky number 19! In June, Nineteenth Amendment became one of 19 companies selected, out of over 2,000 applicants (!), for the third class of Grand Central Tech.We packed up our office and moved a few blocks north to 335 Madison Avenue. Now, at Facebook’s old NY HQ, we could not be happier!
Manufacturing in Puerto Rico got up and running! We produced our first garments with PR factories. Inspired by the island’s beauty, we brought you live to our summer editorial photoshoot in Old San Juan.
While our designers spent the month finishing their new collections for fashion week, we spent the month perfecting our new platform. On the 30th of August 2016, we announced the New Nineteenth Amendment. A scalable manufacturing platform where designers can control their own manufacturing process through our technology and network of connected partner manufacturers. We opened up the platform to all designers and changed our fee structure to be the most aligned with emerging brands. There was no better way to start NYFW!
We went back to our roots for Boston Fashion Week (BFW) and brought three of our designers’ collections to Boston’s most fashionable for a night of art and design at Liquid Art House. Along with shopping pre-sale collections and meeting designers, patrons were invited to spray paint a mural in LAH’s gallery setting.
Before the start of holiday retailing, we got expert advice for our brands from former dean of Parsons’ and our advisor Simon Collins who moderated a panel with Opening Ceremony associate director of performance marketing Julie Lefkowitz and blogger and former Barney’s New York buyer Nika Diwa at the Leesa Dream gallery in SoHo.
Nineteenth Amendment People Voted for fashion at Lord & Taylor’s NYC flagship store. Eight Nineteenth Amendment designers flew in from around the world to show and sell their collections to Amenders. Designers sketched their new collections on Microsoft Surfaces and Amenders voted for their favorite designers. At the end of the night Lizna from Dallas, Texas, was crowned the winner and awarded a mentoring session with Nina Garcia.
December has left us with time to reflect and plan. We’re busy getting ready for a big Q1 announcement in the new year. Stay tuned till then!
